Service

How I am involved in service in my community and why these efforts are important to me:

I have logged in over 100 hours of community service since my freshman year. I am a member of the National Charity League and have served in the offices of President through Vice President in the past four years. I have won most community service hours from this organization my freshman year.
It is important for me to give back to the community as I have been given so much in my life. When you are out in the world helping others you realize how alike we all really are.

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. One example of how I have demonstrated leadership in both areas:

I have been training at Paavo Run Across Texas the past four years. This is a high intense training camp in South Texas during the month of August, in the heat. This year I was selected as a leader at camp to help the freshman through this grueling week. I have often been asked to guide the younger runners and help them through their difficulties. I have also been elected to PALS (Peer Leadership) for my senior year. I will be going through the elementary schools in my community nurturing the younger kids.

How I pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete:

It's important to eat well and get enough sleep. It's easy being an athlete and thinking you can eat whatever you want. This is definitely not the case in running. I make good choices and often turn down activities that would involve me not getting enough rest. I'm also a dedicated student as we are a team that trains 365 days a year. It is important to make sure the schoolwork is done so that I can focus on training and not stress over the work that I have still left to do. My teammates are also my friends. We spend a lot of time together exploring other venues and activities to keep our running fresh.
