Allatoona rolls over Gilmer to enter 7AAA title game 9-0
October 29, 2011

ELLIJAY - Allatoona blocked out next week's region championship game and everything else for Gilmer.

Miles Jones added another spectacular performance to his resume, rushing for 224 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries as he led the fifth-ranked Buccaneers to a 42-14 victory over the Bobcats in a Region 7AAA contest Friday night.

"They did a great job focusing with all the stuff going on," Allatoona coach Gary Varner said. "We already knew who we were playing next week so that could've been a distraction. The weather could've been a distraction but we came out focused and came out fast like we wanted to."

Next Friday, Allatoona (9-0, 5-0) will face Ridgeland in the region title game for the second straight year, the only difference will be this title game will be played at Buccaneer Stadium in Acworth.

Against Gilmer, the tone was set early by Jones, who ran for at least 10 yards on his first three carries and 28 yards on his seventh carry of the drive. The senior closed the 12-play possession with a 4-yard run for a 7-0 lead with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

Three possessions later, T.J. Herron burst up the middle untouched for a 51-yard TD and a 14-0 advantage with 3:47 remaining in the second.

"The running game was good," Varner said. "We got to the edge a lot even though they loaded up the box pretty good."

Then Allatoona got a chance to work on its 2-minute offense just before halftime.

While Jones, who had 144 rushing yards in the first half, continued to pile up positive yardage, Jeremy Uzee highlighted the drive with two first-down passes to Kenny Padtha before capping the nine-play possession with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Clarence Soleberry on a slant pattern for a 21-0 lead with 14 seconds left in the half.

"We had the big 2-minute drive right before the half where our quarterback made some good plays and we made some good catches," Varner said. "Going (to the locker room ahead) 21-0 instead of 14-0 made a big difference."

After the Bucs forced the Bobcats into their sixth straight empty possession (five punts, one fumble), Jones put the game out of reach with an 80-yard sprint to the end zone for a 28-0 cushion with 9:21 to go in the third quarter.

Robert Johnson ran for a 40-yard touchdown and Terence Sykes had a 75-yard kickoff return for Allatoona, which finished with 366 rushing yards
