Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.

I have been Varsity in both Cross Country and Track and Field every semester of my entire high school career. I have been honored as a senior to have been selected as Team Captain for my school's cross country team, helping to direct and motivate my team members. This year I am a Community Mentor as an elective, helping in a Freshman English class as a role model and help for students. i also advocated to be allowed to join the leadership class that is working to implement the sustainable community garden at my school. I was nominated for and participated in a World Leadership class in Washington DC as a 7th grader, studying leadership styles and our nation's history.

Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

I think it is important to lead a balanced life - having fun but also doing hard work. I am not interested in doing drugs or alcohol or in being with people who are into this lifestyle. I take my training very seriously, including warm-ups and cool downs and getting enough rest and good nutrition. I have taken physical education classes every year to aid in my performance. i have also used physical therapy and chiropractic care to recover from my foot strain that hampered my last year. I try to have a healthy attitude and respect for others, supporting my team members, showing school spirit and learning from my mistakes.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.

My passions are athletics, especially running, and animals. I have volunteered at the Oregon Humane Society for the past 6 years and was Teen Volunteer of the month in December 2009. One area I have helped in is running with the dogs. I volunteer at many running events for the community such as for the Portland Marathon each year. I have have a passion for the environment and am involved in starting a sustainable commmunity learning garden at my school. I also like computer technology and have volunteered recyling computers for Free Geek and have begun to volunteer about 3 hours a week at my school helping staff with computer technology. I am a member of the National Honor Society.
