I have a younger sister who has special needs (Angelman Syndrome). My family does a lot of fundraising and activities to raise awareness about this disorder.
I have been accepted into our schools Leadership Academy for the past 2 years. To get into this program, students have to have demonstrated leadership skills and qualities. I hope to be a role model to younger African American student-athletes in my community. I also hope to be a role model to those children who are in foster care, as I was when I was young, prior to being adopted by my parents.
I participate in advanced weightlifting before school everyday and then also work out everyday after school for football/baseball conditioning during the winter months when I am not in season. I also work one on one with a personal trainer 3 days a week throughout the year.
I have participated and volunteered for the Angelman Syndrome Foundation Walk fundraiser for the last 4 years. My sister, who is 11 years old is diagnosed with having Angelman Syndrome. The funds raised go towards helping fund research in hopes that someday a cure will be found for this disorder. My sister suffers from cognitive delays, is nonverbal and has a seizure disorder. She will need lifelong care and supervision if a treatment isn't found!
