Ice Hockey Honors

My greatest asset would without doubt be my skating ability. I always knew I was fast, as I placed first in the state bantam skills competition for both forward and backwards skater my first and second year of bantams. It wasn't until this season as a senior that I truly realized just how fast that is. I found myself almost effortlessly catching players at full speed from almost 30 feet or more away. Everyone on my team soon remarked on just how fast I was becoming. Beside being quick, I play a body much larger than my own. My mechanics allow me to have the physical role on the ice that a much, much larger skater would present one with. I am not afraid to go into the corners to dig and grind for pucks.

This season our team finished 3rd in our region of 8 very equally matched teams. We had a very gritty post season run with two overtime wins that sent us to the state tournament for the second year in a row as the 4th seed from the east. Our first game we played the 1st seed from the west and dominated them. In the semifinal game we played who would become the 2015 state champions and lost 3-1 with an empty net goal after they scored two in the third period on a poor 5 minute major call. Despite an aggressive push back for the lead and hitting a few posts and crossbars in the closing minutes, their goalie proved resilient. We played a tough 2nd seed west team for the 3rd place game and despite outshooting them 38-26, we would lose in overtime on a poor play by our goaltender.

Additional Questions:
Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?
-
Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.
-
Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

As a student athlete who is exposed to the many different bad choices that float around a high school, it is crucial to think before you act. I have several friends and prior teammates who failed to do so. The results defiantly hurt both their academic and athletic careers. The use of illegal drugs and alcohol doesn't only lead to poor choices at the moment of usage, but can also create a dependency where you will do very dumb things in order to obtain those substances.
I have always told myself to "Just say no" when being offered illegal substances. Sometimes you have to be more stubborn than you would want. So far this method has worked flawlessly.
As every student athlete knows, you have a very very busy schedule and sometimes you have no time for anything but food from the rink, or fast food. It is very important that you try and eat as healthy as possible. Before each game or practice i will usually have some sort of fruit or a granola bar versus a candy bar or bag of chips.
Those are some of the things i do to remain a healthy student athlete.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.
