My name is Jasmin Lee Belsom, I am 17 years of age, a Senior at Tatum High School, Tatum New Mexico. I live in Crossroads, New Mexico; 26 miles North of Tatum. My mother Teresa Gandy is an amazing women, she has been at ever event she was able to go to since I can remember. She supports me in everything I do, academically and sport related. My father Tommy Gandy is a great man, since he married my mom he has been there for me no matter what rooting me on to victory. I have always been involved as much as I can with sports, and other activities ever since I could be involved. I have been living in Tatum going on 5 years now. Tatum is a small town, the school academically is great I feel their sports program is even greater. The volleyball team has won State 4 times in a row, the girls basketball team has gone to state every year but we fall short of getting the blue so far and our Track & field team has gone to state every year. I have played every sport available to stay away from unhealthy activities other young teenagers get into now a days. I have run track since my 8th grade year in Tatum and I have gone to State as well every year since my 8th grade year. I participate in Long jump, Run the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, I also run the 400 in the medley relay. Starting this last season I was in the 4x1, and the 4x2. I have gone to state in every event I participated in since my 8th grade year. In the 100m hurdles I did not place my 8th grade year in 2010, 2011, 9th grade year I placed 4th, 2012, 10th grade year I placed 2nd, 2013, 11th grade year I placed 3rd. In the long jump just this last season I placed 3rd jumping a 15'06''. My state qualifying run in the 100m hurdles was a 00:16.36. In the Medley relay on the 400m run I ran a 00:61.00. I look forward to the upcoming year to improve as a leader as well as a teammate. I am especially looking forward to track to improve on my hurdling, running and jumping abilities. My intentions in college is to complete my studies in athletic training, join the work force and then continue my education to become a licensed occupational therapist. Academically I have had always above a 3.20 average, I try my best to study hard and do the best I can in my classes. Family, School, and Sports is a great importance to me, everything I am involved in I put 100% effort in to the activity to prove I can do my best and have tried my best.
Being a leader on and off the field is important to me in many ways. I have always wanted to help the younger students in every sport our school provides. Volleyball, Basketball, and Track & Field are the sports I have grown up playing. Track and Field has become a great interest to me since i have been able to compete. I have always tried my best to help everyone who needed help in practice or out of practice. Our school is small, at most 25 kids to a class. Helping other children makes me feel great, knowing that i can keep them interested in competing. This last Track & Field season i found out that most of the Junior High Track Team was not able to buy the right shoes to run in, so I went to my dad and started telling him that the kids needed shoes to run, jump, and throw in, I had my dad go to his boss to see if their company could provide money to buy them shoes. The company was able to provide the money to buy the shoes. I went and asked their coach if we could get the shoes for them and the coach said yes. At the first Junior High Track Meet they were running, jumping, and throwing in new Track shoes. During the Track season I was asked to help some of the younger runners in their events. So, all Track Season before and after my practice I would stay as long as they needed me to help the younger runners in their events. I was also nominated along with two other of my teammates for an sportsmanship award. I received a Basketball Sportsmanship Award. Also, along with a Fighting Heart Award from my Coach. These are ways i was a leader on and off the field.
Pursuing a healthy athletic performance as a student-athlete is important to me. Eating right, training right, and keeping my body healthy so I can perform to the best of my ability is how I succeed in all of my sport related activities. I try my best to eat right and to not eat candy, fast foods, and greasy foods or drink any sodas. I stay away from the people who are partying and drink alcohol. Keeping a healthy diet is a great way to keep my energy, stamina, and physical abilities up and going. I have always tried my best to get in the gym as much as I can to keep my body healthy and fit. I live 26 miles North of Tatum New Mexico so there can be some problems driving back and fourth from town. So I will get out and run out in my pastures to build up my leg strength, running on different surfaces; dirt, rocks, open roads. I try the best i can to lift and keep myself fit during the summer. I go to basketball and volleyball camps during the summer to keep myself busy and i get different work outs from both sports. I also try to swim most of the summer so i can get a water work out in between running and lifting during the summer. During, school I play every sport my school provides; volleyball, basketball, and track & field. I am always running, lifting, and keeping my body healthy and fit for the next match, game, or meet. These are ways I pursue keeping a healthy athletic performance as a student-athlete.
