As we see so many athletes today not be role models for the younger generation, it is very important to me to be that role model. I want to be the person that younger wrestlers can look up to and be someone that is am example to follow. There is so much peer pressure out there today on young kids that they really need someone to follow not only on the mat but of the mat too. I attempt to be an athlete that shows true sportsmanship whether I win or lose. I think it is very important that you respect your coaches and work hard not only for yourself but for your team as well. My dad always taught me that whatever you do to do it with all your heart! Wrestling is a great sport but your school work is just as important. I strive to do the best I can in my classes. I am a very good student as well. I feel honesty is one of the most important traits in a person character. It affects every part of your life. I hold on to that because once you lose it it is very difficult to get it back.
Eating right is one of the most important parts of training. You can't get the most out of your body without good nutrition. Especially in wrestling when you are normally cutting weight. I eat the best foods that I can to give me energy. I don't cut to much weight that it becomes unhealthy. I would rather lift more and get stronger then cut an unhealthy amount of weight. You can't wrestle to your best if you don't have enough food to burn. There is a middle line there that you have to find. Cutting weight has to be done in a healthy way too. I try and take a few week to cut the weight I need rather then cut it all in a week. Your body needs time to adjust or you will have no energy at all. Also staying hydrated is very important. Drinking the right things count. I don't drink sodas or sugary juices. Plenty of water and some sports drinks when needs but I also limit them. Water is the best thing to drink. After practice I drink chocolate milk a lot instead of a sports drink.
The school I attend requires me to have community service hours every year. As a freshman I was required to have 10 hours. As a sophomore I am required to have 15 hours. I have helped with running youth wrestling tournaments and also a high school tournament which consisted of helping set up and clean up but also running tables. My school also has retreats and service trips that are done during the school year and also during the summer. I plan on attending one this summer. We go into an area that needs help, we clean up houses and do carpentry and painting. We also do a lot of visiting with the elderly. I am also am President of Student Council for my class which requires me to help my fellow students with activities during the school year and also help to correct problems that may arise. This summer I have been helping build a salon in my sister's house which has given learning experience with hanging drywall. Any little experience that I get will help me in my life later on. Spending time with elderly people is really important because they can share a load of wisdom if you are willing to listen. Helping the less fortunate shows me how blessed I am and makes me very grateful.
