Broke a finger and had to miss the last 7 games of my sophomore year, it was the game after I was called up to play varsity, I broke it during warmups. I got a concussion diving into a wall for a loose ball midway through junior year, I had to miss 4 games because of it.
I have been volunteering very much through my highschool career in the community. I love the game of basketball and since it is one of my best skills, I want to be able to share that with the next generation. My freshman, sophomore, and junior year now I have volunteered 36 hours at the bees basketball camp, teaching 3rd-8th graders the skills they need to succeed at the next level. Through skill work and competitions, we have taught the kids to work hard, to be leaders, and to be work together effectively as a team.
Another volunteering opportunity I have been blessed to have been able to have taken part in is empowerment sports. On 2 occasions I have worked with special needs kids, teaching them the game, and reefing a game that they got to play. This was important to me cause I felt like I made a difference in these kids lives, they don't really have many opportunities to do these things, but when they do it means the world to them as well as their parents. If I can give my time, to make someone elses day better, I really feel that I have had a successful day.
At the end of my sophomore year I helped as an assistant coach to a local aau team. As well as the camps, one of my major goals for this opportunity was to teach kids to work hard and really develop their character.
This year, I helped to chaperone a 6th grade social activity at our communities middle school. I really liked this opportunity because I was able to interact with young kids and be able to show them a good time, that they normally would not have had the opportunity to have. This one wasn't so much as much benefiting the community as it was just helping the kids to have a good time, and relax a little bit from their everyday school lives.
Also this year I volunteered at a 5k where I helped set up the event, I marked the course, I passed out water, and I helped to run the concession stand.
