With three entries, the Three Rivers Junior Rowing team on Washington's Landing will be well represented at the Head of the Charles Regatta — the world's largest two-day rowing event — in Cambridge, Mass. this weekend.

A men's youth eight and a women's youth eight qualified after placing in the top halves of their events last year. A women's youth four was selected in a blind draw for clubs that did not finish in the top 50 percent.

Three Rivers Junior Rowing coach Steve McCarthy said it is the most entries the team has had at the regatta.

Head of the Charles director of operations Brendan Mulvey said youth events, which are for high school students, are the regatta's most popular. Only 50 percent of lottery participants get in, he said.

There are 85 entries in each of the three races in which Three Rivers Junior Rowing will compete.

“We have been lucky enough to continue qualifying the men's and women youth (eights) for the past few years,” McCarthy said. “We were fortunate our bid was selected (for the women's youth four). I think our women's side is big and strong enough that we should be able to qualify both of those entries for next year.”

The men's youth eight and the women's youth eight placed 36th and 37th, respectively, a year ago.

Ryan Jackson, Joey Towell, Alex Engel, Brent Thomasmeyer, Zach Springer, Garrett Stocker, Wyatt Hathaway, Jonathan Hydock, plus coxswain Haley Cooke, will compete in men's youth eights. Iain Athey will be a spare.

In the women's youth eight, Abby Novak, Mia Tsudis, Tori Trovato, Tessa Kimmy, Jessica Fabian, Sophie Winbush, Lexi Heinz, Hailey Fox and coxswain Annika Christensen will occupy seats.

Abbi Altman, Sophia Carlson, Anna Farnan, Heather Walter and coxswain Emily Arnold-Mages will be in the women's youth four.

Walter, a junior at North Hills High School, looks forward to competing at the Head of the Charles.

“I went last year to cheer on the team and visit (my brother) Brad (a member of the Northeastern University men's rowing team based in Boston, near Cambridge),” said Walter, 16, of Ross. “I am so excited to race this year; it has always been one of my goals.”

Hydock, a senior at North Allegheny, expects a strong showing at the Head of the Ohio Regatta in downtown Pittsburgh earlier this month to help the men's eight. The boat finished second to Central Catholic, which also qualified for the Head of the Charles.

“The result allows the men's team to set the bar just a little higher and we certainly have high expectations,” said Hydock, 18, of Marshall. “Last year, we lost to Upper Arlington (of Ohio) by three seconds (for 35th place). This year, we start one place after them, giving us an opportunity to pass them and hopefully give our boat a huge confidence boost.”

Three Rivers Junior Rowing took first place in Women's Youth 8+ and second in Women's Youth 4+ at the Head of the Ohio.

Central Catholic coach Jay Hammond expects his crew to finish in the top 20 again in men's youth eights, although it is rebuilding. The Vikings were ninth a year ago.

“We graduated a lot of talent, but this current group does seem very focused and the boat does seem to have come together pretty nicely so far,” Hammond said.

Gennaro Valant, Dan Wisniewski, Trent Uhlemann, Anicet Mundundu, Shane Burke, John Peilert, Jack Maier, Creighton Tarrant, plus coxswain Evan Craska, will compete for the Vikings, Hammond said
