I am a senior at Timberland HS in Wentzville, MO. I have been a thrower for the high school team since I was a freshman, throwing the shot put and discus. During my sophomore year I also began attending Throw for the Road Hammer Club, throwing the hammer and weight.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia in elementary school. Being dyslexic has helped me with my work ethics in the classroom that has carried over to my training. I know that if I want to succeed in any aspect of my life I have to work hard. This is true for my classes as well as my throwing.
On the throwing field in high school, I have gone from being the underclassmen to a leader on the squad. I am always willing to help the other throwers work on their technique.
At our throwing club, I help the younger throwers every practice. This includes several middle school throwers including my sister. Whether we are in the field throwing or just lifting weights.
At the end of my Sophomore year in high school, I was approached by a previous teacher about joining a new organization at our school. The Link Crew was a new concept for the Wentzville School District to assign upperclassmen to Freshmen coming into the school. Teachers nominate an upperclassmen and they have to go through a selection process with other teachers and administrators. I was selected as a Charter Member. We had training during the summer and was able to welcome the Freshmen class with an orientation before school started. We gave them a tour of the school and a welcome to school party. During the the school year, we are a symbol to these students if they need help, either finding a class or just trying to fit in. We are a lifeline to many of the new students. I have been with the Link Crew my Junior and Senior year, I only wish it was around when I was a Freshmen.
As an athlete, I take my physical health very seriously. I train all year long with the Hammer and Weight throw. We condition each week by throwing, but also by lifting and strength training.
I also know that physical health is only part of the being a healthy athlete. Mental health is a major part of being an athlete. I train hard both physically and mentally for each meet. I visualize throwing before I step into the ring. I try to picture where I want the implement to land, whether it is the hammer, weight, shot or discus.
Another part of being a healthy athlete is to bond with your team mates. Your team becomes part of your family and they are a great support group. Although, I am ecstatic when I do well, I am also proud of my teammates when they perform well.
