In the end, it felt surreal. A player of short words made them even shorter.

And you couldn't blame Phoenix Sandra Day O'Connor junior pitcher Sam Bedker for it. She was going up against the potent lineup of No. 1 Peoria Centennial and her team was facing arguably the best pitcher in Class 5A Division II, Morgan Montemayor.

So after Bedker pitched a one-hitter, going 6 1/3 innings without a hit, and No. 4 Sandra Day O'Connor held on for a 2-1 win Saturday in a 5A-II winner's bracket game at home, her short words were understood.

When asked about working on a no-hitter into the seventh, she simply said she didn't even know she had it.

"Sam is very low-key," Sandra Day O'Connor coach Melissa Shepherd said. "She shows absolutely no emotion. She probably wouldn't have known if she threw a perfect game.

"
Sandra Day O'Connor moves on to Wednesday's Pool A final at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix and faces the winner of Centennial and No. 12 Scottsdale Desert Mountain, which beat No. 5 Scottsdale Chaparral for the second time in the tournament. Centennial and Desert Mountain play Tuesday at Sandra Day O'Connor High.

Montemayor threw 11 strikeouts, but Sandra Day O'Connor got a jump early. Kaitlyn Richardson scored her team's first run in the first inning on Jordan Braun's single. In the sixth, Richardson hit a double on the ninth pitch of her at-bat, scoring Sarah Edwards for the eventual winning run.

Bedker had just two strikeouts but worked the outside of the strike zone all game and gave Centennial's batters fits. Even Centennial's one hit should have been an out. Krystal Garcia's fly ball to left field fell in between two frozen Sandra Day O'Connor outfielders standing three feet from each other.

Sam Rioja's one-out groundout scored Garcia, but Bedker would end the game with her second strikeout.
