Posted July 7th, 2008 by atuline
After going through the Provincial Championship round-robin undefeated against Coquitlam, Burnaby and Kamloops, the Sting entered the gold medal game against Burnaby determined to win. It was clear that Burnaby was not going to go down easily when the Sting were surprised early in the first half with a well struck Burnaby ball from the 20 yard line which found the upper corner of the Surdel goal to make the score 1-0. The Sting maintained their composure and the rest of the half was controlled by the Sting with several chances developing from the defence, through the midfield to the forward line. After two close chances to score, the Sting were rewarded near the end of the first half when Melanie Martin put a perfect cross along the face of the goal where Lindsey Briggs one timed it past the Burnaby goal keeper. As the second half started, both sides came out determined to take home the gold. Both sides played a tough, physical game with a high level of intensity truly deserved in a Provincial final. Despite one or two chances for both teams, neither could score in regular time. The high level of play continued during the first OT period with Sting slowly gaining the upper hand. As the clock wound down in the second OT , Surdel increased the pressure on the Burnaby defence resulting in a corner kick. Lindsey Briggs made a perfect corner kick, that Jenny Dunn headed into the Burnaby net for the win. This is the third provincial championship in the last four years for the Sting who are now off to the Nationals in Nova Scotia. Special thanks to all the crazy green haired parents and fans that came out to cheer the Sting on!
