Goalkeeper stats include regular season games and tournaments.
On the field, I have been applying what I have learned through my coaches (high school, club and the Olympic Development Program) by being a stronger voice in the water. As a goalkeeper, I try to lead by example, offering support when it is needed and communicating with my teammates to let them know where I want them in the pool and what they need to be doing.
Off the field, I started tutoring two second grade girls I met in Detroit while serving on a missions trip. I knew they were both struggling with school, especially math and reading. For twelve weeks, I commuted to Detroit on Monday evenings to meet with them. They have been an inspiration to me. My involvement also led my dad to volunteer to be a tutor for a middle school boy struggling with math. While I had to take a break from tutoring during the high school water polo season, my dad has continued tutoring and I plan to return to tutoring these girls next fall.
For the past three summers, I have spent a week at Military Avenue Church in Detroit, Michigan as part of a high school missions trip. The church is in an area of poverty and blight. Each summer, a group of high school students from the Ann Arbor area spend a week at the church teaching Vacation Bible School for children who live in the surrounding area. When the children leave, we spend the remainder of the day doing community service projects such as cleaning, painting, weeding and repairing the church and adjacent properties. This service is extremely important to me as it provides an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children, to let them know that someone cares, and to have a positive impact on the neighborhood.
