Personal Highlights

My name is Clare Wade and I am a junior at Chaminade Julienne High School in Dayton, Ohio. I have been rowing since the Spring of my freshman year at Dayton Boat Club. I definitely have aspirations to row in college and have been looking at many different programs that support this, as well as my major area of interest.

Additional Questions:
Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.

As a member of a competitive rowing team, things can become quite tense at times. I feel that through being a positive presence with the ability to interject humor at appropriate times I, have become a leader on my rowing team and that I help to create strong team bonds. When not not on the water I strive to be a positive role model in staying true to what I know is the right thing to do.

Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

In my pursuit to be the best rower that I can become, I have learned that I must balance my desire to push myself to go one step further each practice with my need to care for my mind, body and soul. This is a work in progress but I find that through strong time-management, relaxation and keeping rowing "fun", this balancing act is possible.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.

I have been blessed to attend a Catholic High School that places a great deal of emphasis on diversity and service to our school and broader community. To date I have accumulated over 250 hours of service and will continue to perform these activities throughout my remaining time in high school. To serve my school community, I am heavily involved with the office of Ministry and Service through programs that allow me to be a servant leader (homeroom service representative, FLIGHT-Faith Leaders in God's Hands Today leader, etc.). I have also worked to provide service to the local community by volunteering at St. Vincent DePaul (homeless shelter), Elizabeth New Life Center (pro-life agency), The Glen (local shelter for women/children victims of domestic violence, and Join Hands Miami Valley (community outreach activities). I have also had the privilege of serving the broader community by being a member of the core team in planning two regional youth retreats, attended mission trips to East St. Louis and Chicago and have served as a volunteer staff member helping to implement week long summer retreats in Cape May, New Jersey. My sophomore year, I received the George Early Scholarship at my school. The George Early Scholarship is given to a student who has distinguished him or herself as a servant leader. This scholarship was created to encourage ongoing service and to honor a person who is an example of Christian service for the Chaminade Julienne community. Service to others is a natural part of who I am that will always influence what I do in life. Helping others and being a strong role model for my peers is a gift that I have been given and it is important to me that I use the gift for the greater good.
