Hudl Account- (High School Team Highlights): http://www.hudl.com/profile/8814672/maryam-vandergriff-shuja

I'm a junior right now, playing as a midfielder for my school's varsity team and on an SCL club team. I am the captain of my high school team, and usually play the majority of the game for school and club. I also run cross country in the fall.

I have been playing soccer since I was 4, select since I was 9 (playing 2 years up my first year), at Lonestar Soccer Club, PAYSL, River City Rangers-Round Rock, and now Galaxy Soccer Club. I made Varsity as a freshman for my high school team, and I was a starter. This year, as a sophomore, I made the Varsity team again as a starter, and am looking forward to improving this upcoming season with my team. I also participated in cross country this year, to get in better shape for soccer, and to compete in meets.

My stats so far were for my freshman high school season, after our first tournament. I didn't continue to update them after that. I will add high school and club season when it starts back up in the spring. I am not including goals from club in the past (fall season or before), or the middle school team in my stats. For club I've scored around 20-25 goals since fall 2015, and in middle school I scored 2 goals in 5 games in 7th grade, and 4 goals in 5 games in 8th grade (-March 2017)

Additional Questions:
Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?

I want to play college soccer so that I can continue to play the sport I love. It's my dream to find the right school for me, academically and athletically, and play there. In addition to being allowed the opportunity to play, the level, focus, and style of play will be new and challenging, making me into a better player. Finally, college soccer will give me new, fun, experiences, that I can't get anywhere else, and will give me the chance to meet and become friends with new people.

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.

I am the captain of my high school team, as decided by my teammates. I earned this position by reinforcing information about games and schedules to my team, initiating and leading warm-ups in practices and games, deciding on what drills will prepare us for our game during the warm-up, and encouraging my teammates to improve in every way they can. An example of this is when I helped one of my teammates to pass her classes, by offering to tutor her, which allowed her to play the season. During games I facilitate the ball throughout the field, creating goal-scoring opportunities, and helping my teammates work together to defend our goal and attack the opposing team's goal.

Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

As a student-athlete and teenager, it's hard to balance school, school and club sports, work, driver's ed, chores, socializing, other responsibilities, and sleep. In order to do this. I use all the free time I have working on homework. If I don't have any homework, I move on to the next task that needs to be completed, such as chores or driver's ed. I always try to go to bed by 11, which is sometimes hard. When I haven't been getting enough sleep, due to having too much homework, I usually make the decision to tell my boss that I would like a day off to do homework, and if necessary, skip soccer practice. This only happens every once in a while, but it is a necessary action to take. When weighing out the pros and cons, sleep must come first. Without sleep, athletic and academic performance is hard to maintain. In addition to sleep, it is also important to keep a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and preserve fitness. To do this, I try to watch what I eat without restricting myself, drink a certain amount of water each day, and make sure to get touches on the ball and run when I have long periods off of cross country and soccer. Most importantly, I listen to what my body is telling me, and make decisions from there.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.

I'm currently aiming for the Barbara James service award, through HOSA. The goal of this award is to volunteer a certain number of hours related to health. I volunteer with other members of HOSA at community events, with my soccer teams, and at our local serving center. I have about 150 hours right now. This important to me because I know that whatever little things I'm able to do will help people in need, make little kids happy, benefit the environment, or positively affect my city in some way that I would otherwise be unable to do.
