Additional Questions:
Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?
Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.

Although I am a novice rower, from my very first few months of training the Steward's Foundation has always promoted the concepts of teamwork and responsibility within the sport of rowing. Therefore, being a leader on my team demands both of these. By encouraging the cooperation of all members of the team during times such as when we are de-rigging or rigging boats, I show leadership qualities. Similarly, I uphold the belief that if one person shows responsibility, others shall follow. As a "Trident," I must always lead my fellow teammates to respect the name we wear on our unisuits because everything you do reflects on the team. Whether that means I must remain focused on the race course or back at our trailer, I demonstrate leadership qualities by advocating the core values of my team.

Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

Sometimes being a student-athlete can be misunderstood by others and become "underrated." Especially in my situation where the majority of the people at my school do not even know what rowing is, it can become difficult to remain focused on my own personal goals and development when faced with the demands of those around me. I never thought time management would become such an important skill to master when I first began this sport. The physical drain on my body after each and every practice sometimes begins to overshadow other factors of my life. It requires a large amount of self determination to remain focused in all areas of my life. I assure my own healthy athletic performance by following the one percent rule. First introduced to me by my coach, this concept states that by improving all aspects of ones life by one percent, one can achieve optimal performance in the field the improvement is directed towards. Derived by the head coach of the British Men's Cycling Team, this has led them to win numerous titles and honors within their sport, dominating all competition. therefore, by improving the academic spectrum of my life, I can further my athletic performance as well. Using this method helps me to remain grounded and stay focused on achieving my goals.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.

I am actively serving in my community through many different organizations within my school and community. As a member of my schools Relay for Life Club, I devote my time to raising money and awareness for The American Cancer Society in hopes of one day finding a cure for cancer. Throughout my life I have been personally affected by this disease due to the fact that many members of my family have bravely fought and lost this battle. This stands to be a motivating factor in my participation and involvement with this organization. Similarly, I have also assisted in the establishment of a "Dance Marathon" at my school this year. This event is in association with The Children's Miracle Network, an organization dedicated to providing funds and support to children and their families faced with terminal medical diagnoses'. Although not having any familial connections to this cause, I do feel a strong ethical call to assist and give what I can to this institution. Finally, I am also a avid participate in the community service operations of my youth group at Hope Lutheran Church of Plant City. Our activities include feeding the homeless in the park and always contributing our time and efforts into the preservation of our community through acts of ministry. Growing up in the South, I have always strongly valued the concept of a wholesome, united community. My service within my own society puts forth my own personal philosophy that if everyone aids the whole, the whole will persevere to a measure that would have never been reached without that cooperation and determination of each individual. Service within my community is an essential component of my life because of the role it plays in my personal consciousness, therefore fueling me to serve when others call for help.
