Serving as captain of my local rowing club, I am constantly required to set an example for younger rowers on the team. I recognize the effect that a leader can have on other individuals in an organization. Thus, I make sure that during practices I stay motivated and focused at all times. I motivate others around me to pursue their goals as well in order to achieve our common goal of improvement. Outside of rowing, I serve as a leader in various clubs like National Honor Society. Serving as a board member of National Honor Society requires a huge degree of coordination and communication. Clear and positive communication is the key to success as a leader. Through rowing and extracurriculars I have demonstrated my abilities to be a leader.
I realize that to truly succeed as a student athlete I need to budget my time wisely. Over the past three years I have learned how to effectively manage my time to balance school, rowing, volunteering, and other clubs while simultaneously doing additional workouts outside of practice.
Community service is imperitave to reach a greater understand the complexity of other people's perspectives. Thus, I make sure to be heavily involved in volunteering activities. I am a board member for the school's National Honor Society, as well as President of Oxfam Club at NHS, working in coordination with Oxfam America. Through both of these activities I have had the opportunity to help my community and communities around the world like South Sudan. In doing this, I have broadened my understanding of global issues, and the importance of charitable work. Overall, these efforts have helped me to become a more open minded and accepting person.
