I want to be recruited to dive in college so I can enter a strong academic and athletic university as an integral part of a team of elite athletes who train and think like me--to become an honorable representative of the school as a well respected student athlete, to contribute points. I want to be able to bring my leadership and sportsmanship to a group of student athletes to help motivate the team as a whole and the individuals to their best, both on the boards and as students on campus.
Leadership happens in every day scenarios as well as in holding positions. For me, I have become a natural leader on my high school dive team--as a person fairly new to the sport myself, I have taken newer, younger and less experienced divers under my wing to set an example of "anything is possible", to encourage divers at their lowest to endure and push through, and to set an example of how to be a fun, happy, and joking athlete and friend off the board, but to show there is a time and place to do so, to respect the coach and administrators at all times. When it's time to learn and time to compete, it's all hands on deck. Leadership is not about being the boss, but about leading by example and just being human, setting an example in celebratory times as well as challenging times.
My healthy athletic performance is not just how I dive. It's the lifestyle I live and the discipline I need to possess to bring my total athletic performance to it's full potential. I love food, but I follow a lean, low sugar nutrition plan and I condition heavily off the board. I get rest and I sacrifice fun times more than I ever thought I would. This is what is helping me get to the next level.
My efforts as a volunteer at a school for less fortunate young children in the Ft. Lauderdale area is important to me because as a young woman and an athlete who has been given the fortunate opportunity to pursue my dreams and goals, I am able to carry my strength into the classroom to help these children become self confident and empowered to work with what they have to be the best they can be regardless of circumstances.
