Playing sports in college is an experience that would greatly benefit the field I want to work in, sports broadcasting. In the work force, teamwork is required and college athletics certainly strengthen that. It has always been a dream of mine to play hockey as long as possible because I know its lifelong benefits.
This year at the Canlan, my team was not playing well and needed a pep talk. None of the captains had stepped up to do so, so I did. I told my teammates to go back to the basics. My coach pulled me aside after the game and praised me for my leadership. Off the ice, I lead a fundraiser with my high school that raised $6,000 for Alzheimer's research.
I refuse to let performance enhancing drugs boost my performance. Instead, I get better at my sports through practice, watching film, and working out. To improve my mental game, I am sure to stay focused in class, which translates well on the ice.
I volunteer at the local food pantry and participate in Christian service requirements through my school. I am also a member of the Chicago Team Up Against Alzheimer's Youth Council, which plans events and raises money for research on said disease. This is important to me because I find happiness in providing for others as well as putting in effort towards curing a disease I am personally affected by through my mother.
