Hi my name is Maddie Gatzlaff. I am 17 years old and a Junior at Ankeny Highschool in Ankeny IA. I was a USAG competitive gymnast for 12 years and retired from Triad gymnastics, my 8th grade year at level 9 after deciding gymnastics just wasn’t the sport that was going to get me where I wanted to be. Following gymnastics I participated in swim team, cheerleading, and track. Fast forward to my Junior year in high school, my school finally got a pool with a diving board and started their first ever diving team in the year of 2017. I spent a week of my summer at the University of Iowa diving camp working with Todd Waikel and many of his athletes. Through Todd I met Deidre Freeman (a three-time conference champion, All-State, All-District, All-Conference, 2013 U.S. national champion on the 3m board, and 4th placer finisher in the synchronized event and 18th in the 3-meter in the 2012 US Olympic Trials) and had the privilege to work with her for a couple short months. After diving for only 4 months, in my first highschool diving season I qualified for the state highschool championships and placed 15th out of the top 30 divers in the state with an 11 dive score of 390.35. I am currently training with Mike Retelsdorf (In 2004, he was named USA Diving Regional Talent Scout and he had been a USA Diving select Camp coach. Now head coach of the Grinnell College diving team and head coach and director of Mid West Diving Academy which I have recently joined) I have fallen in love with the sport of diving and would love to continue to compete and expand my knowledge and diving abilities in college!
