Boarding School
April 9, 2018
[Class Assignment] At a Baseball Factory showcase last month, I told another player that I am a boarding student at George School, an independent boarding and day school north of Philadelphia. His response was to ask, "Really, what did you do that was so bad?" Sam Fuld the former Tampa Bay Ray, also went to a boarding school (Philips Exeter). He once said in an interview with the New Yorker that when his wife sat in the stands with the other player's wives and told them that Sam went to a boarding school, they asked the same question, "Really, what did he do that was so bad?" For most people boarding school is a foreign idea, even a punishment. But at least in New York City where I'm from there are lots of kids who dedicate a lot of time and effort and money to getting into top academic boarding schools. That was the case for me. I was in middle school when I first thought about the idea. After I visited George School, I realized that boarding school was a great option for me academically. The environment is very good for learning and I get to study with other students from all over the world. I've enjoyed my first three years in boarding school a lot. It's a lot of responsibility. I have to wake myself up every morning, I have to make sure I am at the dining hall during the times it's open, and I spend two hours every night in mandatory study time in our school library. There's very little TV or video games and the lights are out at 11 PM during the weeknights. Boarding school has made me an independent and responsible person. Even though they're only an hour and a half away, I do miss my family, but after three years at George my friends are like family. Overall boarding school has been a great experience and the best thing is that I didn't have to do anything bad at all to get in!!!
