During the summer of 2018, following my novice year, I participated in Mary Whipple's 9th Seat coxswain clinic at the University of Washington. During the week-long program, we listened to recordings, spent time out on the water perfecting steering technique, and had the privilege of being able to ask Mary all sorts of questions. It was very helpful as a younger coxswain and I view it as an important resource. Throughout the majority of the summer, outside of regular practice, I volunteer for the San Diego Rowing Club Learn to Row Camps. This often involves explaining the fundamentals of the stroke, introducing campers to the equipment, and coxing the boats. It helps me grow personally by gaining more and more knowledge through teaching and I enjoy helping expand the sport by providing a helpful experience so athletes have the incentive to return in the fall and join the novice crews. Additionally, I also had the opportunity to hold stakeboats for the USRowing National Team qualifiers down at the Chula Vista training center. It was a great experience seeing such high-level athletes and being able to meet some of them afterward and gain some words of advice. |
