The Wabasha-Kellog Falcon’s roster is stacked with talented seniors and juniors and they have powered their way to the top of the Three Rivers Conference. Although it’s been a team effort, their setter Alana Deangel is their fearless leader. Not only have they won every conference match, but they have beat every team in 3 sets. Teams have been close, but unable to win the race to 25. Below is just a summary of what makes Deangel the been a key contributor:
Decision making: She makes everyone else on her team look better. Alana always seems to find that hitters hand. She knows who is hot and feeds them the ball until the defense adjusts. It helps that she has lots of options too. She uses her varsity experience to create opportunities for her hitters. They don’t get blocked a lot because she recognizes weaknesses in the opponent’s front row. I’ve witnessed first hand how she uses mis-matches to score on the right-side Rachel Gosse (sr. RS) against a smaller left side-blocks. Then when the middle blocker finally comes over to help block, she will switch it up with a fast shoot-set to the outside.
Serving: While many teams have been shifting to “float” serves, WK has stayed strong from the service line with their powerful top-spin serves. Coach, Michelle Evers, calls spots for servers and lets them pick apart teams with powerful, spinning serves that no receiver wants to take. Alana does as well as any; often leading her team in aces. Her serve is so hard to get behind, let alone control.
Toughness: At 5’8” she is not the tallest setter, but not many setters are as strong as her. She is solid, muscle. It’s evident in her front row play, from the service line, and even when she’s blocking against much larger outside hitters. A peek at her Hudl account and you can see she is also a great basketball player too. She manages to bring her physicality to the volleyball court. It is easy to imagine her making the transition to a dual athlete in college.
Alana and the rest of her WK teammates also display great mental toughness. When momentum shifts ruin other teams, her and the team stay strong, regain focus, and prevail. She barely makes mistakes and I’ve never witnessed a mental mistake from her. Her composure is calm, yet determined. She is smart and cunning.
I predict Alana Deangel and the other seniors will lead their team to some major wins at playoff time!
