MVP, training awards, provincial medalist every year I swam since age 7.
Multi-sport Rep team athlete (Volleyball, Competitive swimming, Basketball, Soccer, Ski racing). I am a high academic achiever, volunteer at my school and in my community with the YMCA.
I would like to push my self to be the best I can be and go as far as I can. I am interested in being part of a dynamic team of people who will help me grow as a person and help me reach my athletic potential. There are so many advantages to playing sports at University. It will help me improve my leadership skills, communication with others, keep in shape, make new friends and create a "family" away from home, help keep stress down by exercising, travel to different places I would not normally have a chance to visit and learn from a knowledgeable highly qualified Coaching team.
Off the court: Working as a Lifeguard and a swimming instructor has given me a sound understanding of advanced first aid principles, good judgment, and a mature, responsible attitude toward my role as a leader and dealing with people of all ages. I have learned to work independently; strong communication with my colleagues and the general public; how to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; apply lifeguarding surveillance and advanced rescue techniques; ability to pass a strict physical skills evaluation and annual recertification as stipulated by the BC Lifesaving Society and YMCA; prepare routine administrative paperwork; current knowledge of CPR, AED and emergency medical procedures; follow routine verbal and written instructions; knowledge of customer service standards and operational procedures.
On the court: As a high-performance multi-sport athlete, I have learned how to be a supportive teammate and leader. I have been Captian of my team every year I have played and have been a mentor to the younger players as an apprentice Coach and Volleyball Referee. I have learned to be a positive role model, respect others and care about helping make my team the best it can be. I realize I have to work hard for the things I want instead of it being handed to me and how to believe in myself. I have learned to never give up and always give my best; there is always an opportunity to learn from the experience to improve and work through the tough moments.
Volleyball also has taught me sportsmanship and to respect authority. It has given me life-long friendships and the opportunity to travel, connecting through sport. These friends are my family and I have met friends from all over the world playing volleyball. Time management, discipline is a struggle as an athlete. I have learned how to prioritize my homework, job, training schedule and free time. Because of volleyball, I know all of the hard work I have put in has been worth it and has made me into the person I am today and prepared me well for my future life experiences and career.
What you I before, during, and after my training and games can have a big influence on my performance and recovery. I am always conscious of what I eat and taking care of my health, physically and mentally during my season. I also currently attend private training and the Volleyball Canada Regional Excellence Program weekly. I prioritize my school work and training but ensure I always have time for myself and my friends to stay balanced. I have an amazing support network from my family and friends!
As a volunteer peer tutor, I have had the opportunity to work with students at my school. It has taught me confidence, communication, collaboration, empathy and patience. I was drawn to be a peer tutor as I wanted to contribute and have meaningful interactions. I wanted to make a difference and understood the struggles and stress with needing extra help with a subject. I stepped up to tutor one of the players on my school team who was on academic probation. I also have been Captain of my volleyball team every year since Grade 7, am involved with Grad Council, specifically Grad Apparel and Charity, as well a member of the Sustainability Club at OKM. I have assisted as a Teacher's Aid and a liaison with the international students. As a volunteer apprentice Coach for Volleyball and Swimming, it has taught me responsibility, time management, communication and being adaptable to new situations.
