The Volleycats had battled Lexington hard in recent years, but could never knock down the door. Not today.
A happy group of Volleycats not only knocked the door down, but also took Lexington’s keys.
McNairy Central swept Lexington in straight sets to tie the Lady Tigers for second in the district. MCHS won 25-23, 25-16, and 25-22.
Coach Meg Day’s Volleycats issued an early warning to LHS they meant business by scoring the first four points of the match.
Lexie Weirich scored points early in the first game to help MC take a 6-3 lead. Cayla Watson scored twice to push the score to 8-5.
Lexington rallied with four straight points to take a 9-8 lead, their first time to lead in the game.
A perfect tap by Aubrey Swanson tied it and Lynleigh Day scored to push MC ahead 10-9.
After four straight ties in the game, a kill by Weirich stopped Lexington’s 4-0 run to cut their lead to 16-14.
Trailing 20-16, some unforced errors by LHS enabled the Volleycats to shave the deficit to 20-19. An ace by Bailey Rodgers tied the game at 20.
A kill by Day and a shot out of bounds closed out the first set for McNairy with a 25-22 win.
Weirich scored on a hill and a tip score by Maddie Kirk sparked MC early in game two.
Swanson, Molly Kennedy, and Anna “Digger” Bedwell to boost McNairy to a 7-4 advantage. McNairy led 13-9 when an ace by Day highlighted 3-0 run to give the home team a 16-10 lead.
The Volleycats extended their lead to double-figures on a kill by Swanson. (Followed by Swanson’s foot stomp.)
McNairy trailed 11-9 before Coach Day called a timeout to share some words of wisdom. Have you seen her mad?
The players responded and reeled off 10 straight points to insure there was a celebration ahead for McNairy.
Kirk’s dominance was clear in this run by scoring four of the 10 points. Weirich, Watson, Bedwell, and Day scored during spree that put the game out of reach.
Lexington did not go down easy. They outscored MC 9-2 to cut McNairy’s lead to 24-22.
A Lexington shot out of bounds won match point for MC and the celebration was on. McNairy’s student section set off the confetti and celebrated with their favorite volleyball team.
