Growing up, Crockett County's Raegan Holyfield participated in basketball and dance.

But in the eighth grade, one of her friends suggested that she try volleyball.

Little did she know that four years later, Holyfield would help make program history as the Lady Cavaliers advanced to the Class AA state tournament and won a match for the first time.

"I have made a lot of memories these four years," Holyfield said. "All of those girls are now part of my family and Coach (Bobby) Rawson is a big part of my life. It has been a great four years. Winning at state was a feeling that I have never felt before."

As a senior, she recorded 405 kills, 82 blocks and 102 digs to be named the 2019 All-West Tennessee volleyball player of the year.

"Raegan brought leadership, and she became the offensive threat and defensive blocking that ignited us and got us excited," Crockett County coach Bobby Rawson said. "She had that finisher attitude."

Holyfield said playing basketball and performing in dance recitals helped her as she developed her volleyball skills.

"If you watch her hit and the way she can control her body in the air, it was a skill she learned in dance," Rawson said.

Crockett County had not been to the state tournament since 2013, her sixth-grade year, two years before she decided to try volleyball.

"We had a counselor come in during our preseason camp, and we talked about 'we over me,'" Holyfield said. "It was about team building, and that was a key element in getting us where we got this year. We had some girls on our team that were great encouragers."

That chemistry helped the Lady Cavaliers win the District 14-AA and Region 7-AA titles.
