I want to be recruited to cox in college because I am very grateful for everything that the sport has provided me with in my high school career. My coaches and teammates have helped me to become a better version of myself. I have become so resilient and focused in my past three years in this sport, and I have learned the importance of hard work and perseverance and grown a very thick skin. I love a challenge and I'm very interested in competing on the collegiate level.
As a coxswain, I take my role as a team leader very seriously. I am often the last athlete at the boathouse, helping to organize supplies or load the trailer before a regatta. I make sure that all of the rowers are staying healthy and focused on and off of the water. When I am not at practice, I am an active member in my high school's Climate Action club, which is also my town's Sunrise Movement hub. Within the club, I help to plan school walkouts to protest the government’s lack of action regarding Climate Change and demand action from representatives, fight to pass climate-friendly legislation on the state and federal level, and explore ways to make our lifestyles more eco-friendly. I am the club's social media coordinator.
Health is a very large focus of mine as an athlete. Although I am a coxswain, I still make sure to work out with the rowers as much as possible and I exercise them in the erg room, weight room, and during running circuits. I also make sure to exercise on my free time to stay fit all year. A healthy diet is also important to me, so I focus on filling my body with good nutrients that give me energy to perform well throughout the day.
I raise money to send a girl living in Kenya to private school, protecting her from female genital mutilation and forced early marriage. I sell handmade friendship bracelets, the proceeds of which are put into my charity, which funds everything from her school books and uniform to her school tuition. In the past year, I have raised over $1,500, which is a year's tuition. My goal is to raise $6,000 over the course of four years. This project is important to me because I believe that education is essential to having a meaningful life, and helping a girl my age is a way for me to make a difference.
