Personal Highlights

I started rowing last year, my sophomore spring. I consider myself a novice rower with great potential to succeed in this sport. My roots are as a distance runner and for the past 6 years, I have run cross country. My freshman year, I came in 4th place in the New England Cross Country Championships with a time of 19:00 5k on a hilly course, and all three years I was All-New-England. I ran a time of 18:31 5k on the road. Since Deerfield does not have a rowing program in the fall, I am able to continue running cross country, which keeps me in great aerobic shape and makes the transition into winter rowing training a smooth one. As I was elected captain of the cross country team for my senior year, I plan on running my last season and fufilling my commitment to my teammates.

After having run for so many years, I decided not to run track my sophomore spring; I went to Deerfield to try new things so I decided, at the suggestion of my brother, to try rowing. I ended up loving the camaraderie inherent in rowing and decided I wanted to continue my rowing career throughout high school and collage. My love for the sport can be attributed to my teammates and to the help of my amazing coaches, Melanie Onufrieff and Spencer Washburn. Ms. Onufrieff is the girl's coach and she supported me in my love for endurance sports and has encouraged me in starting a completely new athletic chapter in my life. Mr. Washburn, the boy's coach, runs the winter training program, and through this program, he has helped me to get more out of myself on the erg than I ever thought possible. A few girls and I were able to join the boys in winter training, which has greatly improved my volume and intensity on the erg, and has made me even more excited for the spring season.

Though I began as a distance runner, and will always be grateful for what the sport has taught me, my heart is anchored in rowing and I see a great future in this sport.
