Rowing Additional

When Covid restrictions went into effect in March 2020, my high school team stopped training. It is a very small club team from an urban school and only has a few 8 and 4 boats. Due to restrictions, my high school team is still not back on the water. I was very fortunate to find another local high school club team that was training in singles and doubles and the coach allowed me to join their team in August 2020. This has been a great experience as it has allowed me to continue training in the sport that I love and it introduced me to skulling for the first time. As of January 2021, I continue to train and race with the Great Bridge Crew Club and will also race with my high school team if we have a spring season.

Additional Questions:
Why do you want to be recruited to play sports in college?

Being an athlete makes me a better student and a healthier person physically and emotionally. I am determined and dedicated and love the hard work it takes to train and compete at an upper level. And I enjoy being part of a team that values the same commitment and supports one another.

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. Please provide one example of how you have demonstrated leadership in both areas.

As a more experienced rower with a new group of novices, I feel it is my responsibility lead by example so that they learn not just how to row, but how to show respect for the coach and other team members. Examples include showing that we run to the boathouse not walk, if something needs to be picked up or put away do it, and respect the coach even if you don't always understand or agree with his choices. Off the water, I set an example in the classroom for respecting teachers and being committed to academics.

Please explain how you pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete.

To pursue healthy athletic performance as a student-athlete, requires maintaining a balance between school work, athletics, nutrition, and sleep. To maintain this you have to be organized and committed to getting school work done and eating well so that you are physically and emotionally able to dedicate time to your sport.

Please describe how you are involved in service in your community and why these efforts are important to you.

I volunteer in a group that raises funds for our local children's hospital and volunteer with my crew team at the library. I have also volunteered at blood drives and local athletic events for the community.
