When I first started diving three years ago, I thought I would like it, but I had no clue how quickly I would fall in love with it. Since I started diving I have learned a lot, but I feel I still have a lot to learn. Although my career hasn't been exactly what I would've liked it to be so far, I have been able to see great improvements from hard work. I love to work hard and I think I have a lot of potential to be a strong college diver.
One of my favorite extracurricular activities to be part of was last year when I was part of a mentorship program. Each week, I met with a middle school girl to help her through social and academic challenges. Though I am naturally a shy person and at first I was pretty nervous, I quickly learned to look forward to our Monday morning meetings and I really learned a lot from her. Because of Covid, I haven't been able to meet with her this year, but we still have been able to stay in touch periodically.
As for sports go, this past year I went from having 1 teammate to having 6, and all of them were new to the sport. I did my best as team captain, to both lead with advice and by example. I made sure all of the underclassmen had rides to and from practice and tried to be available to each of them for advice or input. I also made a conscious effort to stay focused during practices and keep a good attitude even if I was frustrated.
One of my favorite ways to be involved in my community is through this wonderful organization in my area called Kids' Food Basket. Kids' Food Basket provides Sack Suppers to kids in my area who would otherwise not have enough food. I have been a part of the Youth Action Board at Kids' Food Basket for the past two years, where I have learned about food insecurity, philanthropy, and leadership. I frequently decorate the bags they package their Sack Suppers in to provide a little extra touch to the children. I also co-founded a Kids Helping Kids Club at my school that helps to spread Kids' Food Basket's message and mission to more students and we help to coordinate volunteer projects within our school community.
