I want to take my running to the next level, and feel the best place to do this is in the USA. It would be the opportunity of a lifetime to travel a bit, train and compete with the best runners and coaches in my division, make new connections and also to further my academics in ways I can’t do in New Zealand.
I am my school’s sports prefect, which involves organising events like our school’s cross country and athletics days, speaking in assemblies and at local events in the community, and leading my teams and peers in sporting and academic events and competitions.
I think a balance between sports, academics and social life is crucial to being a successful student athlete. It is important to have a life that is about more than just sport, and to come out of the college experience with qualifications and connections to take into future careers. This is why I give equal attention to both areas of my life, and also give myself time to relax and recover so I can perform well in the long term. I only began training in 2020 because I felt it was necessary to let myself fully develop before increasing the intensity and volume of my exercise, to avoid injury and burnout.
