College Ice Hockey Recruiting

Ice Hockey Scholarships

Information to help you get recruited and play Hockey at college level.

Ice hockey is an exciting game to play and watch. If you are a good player at the junior and high school levels it could lead to a college athletic scholarship. One of the keys to gaining exposure and earning a hockey scholarship is not limiting yourself to only playing hockey at the high school and prep school levels. You need to gain as much exposure as you can to showcase your talent. This includes creating a recruiting profile to maximize your recruiting visibility to college coaches.

The Ice Hockey recruiting process is very cut-throat. One of the best pathways to getting recruited and earning that coveted Ice Hockey scholarship is to play in the United States Hockey League (USHL) or one of the other many junior hockey and town hockey leagues. Unlike most other college sports, ice hockey coaches like to recruit players who have played Junior A Hockey.

The NCAA classifies Ice hockey as an equivalency sport which means that scholarships offered are usually partial and not full-ride.

There are 44 NCAA Division I and 22 DII colleges that offer Ice Hockey Scholarships.

Each DI college can offer 18 scholarships for both men and women. In Division 2 only 13.5 scholarships are available for men and 18 for women hockey players. There are 80 DIII colleges that play intercollegiate hockey but no athletic scholarships are awarded, other forms of college financial aid may be available.

Five schools at the NAIA level play intercollegiate Ice hockey. Only one of these colleges has a women's team.

What can you do to improve your chances of becoming a scholarship athlete.

1. Create your FREE recruiting profile.

We will instantly connect you with the people that count, the hockey coaches. Create your profile now and maximize your exposure.

2. Academics.

The NCAA and NAIA are placing more and more emphasis on good grades. Being a top hockey player is not enough. You won't get recruited if you do not meet the minimum academic standards. Coaches look to recruit student athletes who are strong academically because they will remain eligible to compete throughout their college career.

3. Work Hard

There’s nothing a college coaches likes better than an athlete who works hard on their game and is continually looking for areas to improve. Become a student of the game and be the best player you can be. Coaches are always looking for highly motivated players.
